Winter ice heightens risk of nasty falls
Email Print
In the past couple of weeks, we’ve heard of a few nasty falls.

This has been a treacherous winter for those who participate in foot traffic.

Freeze and thaw followed by freeze and thaw, and then freeze again.

Sand and salt on the sidewalks offers some traction, but there just isn’t enough of that stuff to take slippery out of the winter equation.

There’s no shame in wearing Eskimo boots to work and church. Sometimes it seems practical to wear hockey equipment, complete with a helmet and pads protecting the knees, hips and elbows.

The fallers tell their stories. One minute, they are walking carefully on the ice. The next, their feet are in the air and they are crashing to the hard surface on whatever body part fate chooses to break their fall.

Their first reaction: I can’t believe that just happened.

Their second reaction: I hurt.

Their third reaction: Can I get up.

Their fourth reaction: I hope no on saw that.

Their fifth reaction: I think I’m going to need to see a doctor.

We haven’t heard from the folks who stay fit by walking the streets year around. These icy conditions must be murder on them.

Walk carefully. Take extra time. Be in a prepare-to-fall posture at all times.

Spring is just around the corner.
