In Park Elementary’s auditorium 28 students in grades 5 through 8 sat patiently on the stage waiting for the district spelling bee to begin.
John Paul Sosa, an eighth grader at Le Sueur-Henderson Middle School took the championship by correctly spelling analgesia. He will compete in the regional spelling bee at South Central College in North Mankato on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 5:30 p.m.
The runner up is Bill Chadwick, a sixth grader at LSH Middle School.
Round one started and ended with only four students misspelling their words.
Nobody spelled a word wrong in round two but as the words became more difficult more students were out of the spelling bee.
By the end of round six of the spelling bee held on Jan. 28 there were five spellers left. Bill Chadwick, Evan Coakley, Kylee LaPierre, Elizabeth Olsson and John Paul Sosa looked at ease on the stage. Some of the words to spell were - hysterical, subterranean and miraculous.
At the end of round six Elizabeth was out of the bee. None of the remaining four spelled their words correctly in round 7 and they all moved on to round 8. Bill spelled ‘enfranchise’ correctly and John Paul spelled ‘adjudicate’ correctly to move into round 9.
Bill’s word in this last round was tough - ‘omniscient’ – and he misspelled it.
John Paul’s word was even tougher – ‘cajolery’ which he got right.
John Paul then had to spell the next word correctly to take the championship.
All the spellers received a certificate and a medal for participating in the spelling bee. Sosa and Chadwick received a new dictionary for taking first and second place. If Sosa cannot participate in the regional bee, Chadwick will take his place.
