LSH girls fall to St. Peter in Subsection 2AA finals
The Section 2AA North Subsection title game between No. 1 Le Sueur-Henderson and No. 2 St. Peter was bound to be a good game no matter who came out on top. It was the Saints that came out on top Monday night 62-42.

Heading into the section tournament the Giants had high hopes to advance multiple individuals to the state tournament. Not only did the Giants advance multiple individualists to the tournament, but they also champed four.

Boys look to subsection basketball action March 9
On the tail end of a rough regular season, the Le Sueur-Henderson boys basketball team is getting ready to turn its sights to the second season – the subsection playoffs. Seedings for the tournament have not been released, but the Giants did not do themselves any favors in seeding as they dropped two conference games last week.

Girls Sub-section 2AA basketball Friday night
LSH defeated Montgomery-Lonsdale Tuesday night 65-34 to advance in the sub-section 2AA girls basketball tournament. The Giants will host Lake Crystal-Wellcome-Memorial on Friday at 7 p.m. at the LSH middle/high school gym.

The Giant wrestling team cruised to a semifinal spot after a blowout win against Norwood-Young America on Thursday evening in the Section 4A team tournament. The Giants easily won 45-16. Being the No. 4 seed, in the semifinals the Giants spared off against last year’s section champion and top seed Lake Crystal-Welcome Memorial and lost 40-23.

Le Sueur-Henderson’s boys basketball team earned a little redemption on Feb. 18 when they edged Montgomery-Lonsdale 70-64. In the first meeting of the two teams back in December, free throws made the difference when the Redbirds came away with a win. Last Thursday, free throws again played a big part in the outcome, but this time it was the Giants who iced the game at the charity stripe.

It wasn’t quite the way the Giant wrestling team hoped to wrap up their regular season with two losses against Waseca and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown last Thursday. The Giants failed to mount a significant lead against either team throughout the competition with final scores of 49-24 against Waseca and 50-22 against WEM.

Just five fish, all small perch, was the catch of the day throughout the annual German-Jefferson Sportsmen Club’s ice fishing contest, held on West Lake Jefferson on Sunday. It was the fewest fish caught in recent history, according to GJSC members.

Freshman goalie Chris Amsden has faced 40 shots per game for the St. Peter/Le Sueur-Henderson/Montgomery-Lonsdale/Le Center boys hockey team and he has saved 88 percent of them. But, with the Bulldogs 3-11 and on a six-game losing streak, he hadn’t been rewarded often for his efforts until Thursday’s 3-2 victory over Windom Area.

Windom Area goalie Brooklyn Drahota is not invincible after all. The senior leads the state in saves with 1,020 and foiled the St. Peter/Le Sueur-Henderson/Montgomery-Lonsdale Bulldogs by stopping 72 shots and finishing with a 2-2 tie in their first meeting. But in the rematch Thursday, the Bulldogs broke through the Windom wall, winning 10-3.

Giants suffer losses on two home courts
Playing conference powerhouses at two different schools made little difference in the outcome as the Le Sueur-Henderson boys basketball team suffered similar losses last week. On Jan. 26 the Giants hosted Sibley East at Le Sueur-Henderson High School and were upended 73-41. Play returned to the Hilltop Elementary gym on Jan. 29 when LS-H faced Mayer Lutheran. Again the contest was never too close as the Giants fell to the Crusaders 87-60.

Boys nip NYA for first conference win
After a tough overtime loss to St. Peter earlier in the week, the Le Sueur-Henderson boys basketball team regrouped to earn its first conference win of the season over Norwood-Young America. The Giants’ 61-59 road win over NYA renewed Coach Robert Steiger’s hopes that his team is turning the corner. “This (win) could not have come at a better time,” Steiger said after the game, “with the next two games against Sibley East and Mayer Lutheran.”
